Meditation is a journey of bringing the mind into the heart. In this silent retreat we will practise mindfulness as well as loving kindness/compassion. Silence will maintained during the meals, during the informal meditation periods, after meals, and in accommodation spaces. (The first meal on Friday and the last lunch on Sunday will not be in silence).  Cultivating mindfulness has a profound effect on our day to day lives, as it helps to realise a sense of calm and stability within ourselves and in our relationships with others. The practice of loving kindness develops our capacity for kindness and non-contentiousness. The combination of mindfulness and loving kindness is a powerful way to learn to see deeply, open our hearts more fully, and act with clarity and compassion, in the quiet environment of the retreat as well as in the midst of our every-day lives. We reconnect with our inner sources of kindness and wakefulness.  The emphasis with this teaching style is that there is nothing we need to add to or take away from what is already here. With this knowledge, participants will be gently guided to a place of compassionate awareness.

There will be ample opportunity to ask or reflect in the group feedback rounds, and the facilitator will be available, upon request for individual guidance.  There will be sitting meditation (sitting on a chair is totally fine) alternated wtih slow, walking meditation. Participants are encouraged not to bring reading or writing materials, and to switch off their mobile phones, so that they can immerse themselves in the practices, and come home to their innermost being. This silent retreat will be suitable for beginners and non-beginners, for people of all religious backgrounds or none, and offers an introduction to mindfulness and compassion practices, and a deepening for those who already practise meditation, in whatever form.  Please note that silent retreats can be an intensive experience, which is not recommended for people who have strong mental and physical health issues.


The main focus of the weekend will be on the mindfulness practice in sitting and walking meditation, as well as in the other activities we engage in on the retreat, with extensive guidance by me but also time for individual practice.
The weekend will also include compassion practices (loving kindness/metta), again in sitting and walking meditation
We will also use other forms of mindful movement (very gentle, not yoga, suitable for all degrees of flexibility).
The periods of sitting are alternated with mindful movement, in the safe and supportive environment of Glenmalure, and in the silence. Participants are encouraged not to read or write during the retreat, and switch off their mobile phones.
There will be ample opportunity to go for walks.
I’ve been practising insight or mindfulness (also called ‘vipassana’) meditation since 1981, and have found it of enormous benefit in my life: in its ups and downs, and the in-between.
The metta or loving kindness practice has impacted on my relationships in various supportive ways, in particular the relationship with myself.
The practices I’ll be guiding don’t require one to have any particular belief system; it’s all intuitive and experiential what ‘happens’, a deepening of one’s inner listening and attunement.



Marjó Oosterhoff is manager and resident teacher of Passaddhi Meditation Centre in West Cork. LocationWilderness Lodge, Glenmalure, Co. Wicklow.

Timing: Workshop runs from Friday evening, including dinner and evening session, until Sunday lunch.

Lodging: Rooms are shared accommodation as double (2 person) and quad (4 person) occupancy. A few single rooms are also available on a first come first served basis. Rooms are self catering with ensuite toilet w/shower and private entrance.

Cost: € 345 Single, € 295 Double shared, € 275 Quad shared. Payments accepted via PayPal (includes service charge, bank transfer (inquire for bank details) or cheque (mailed to Chrysalis, P.O. Box 28, Greystones, Co. Wicklow).  Please note: As space is limited at our residential events, payment is required to confirm registration.
